Immigration Info

01. Contract of work:

To work in Portugal as a non-EU national, you need a Portugal Work Visa. Here’s what you should know:

You must have a job offer from a Portuguese employer, posted for at least a month to give locals a chance.
Your employer applies for a Work Permit on your behalf. If you’re not an EU/EEA or Swiss citizen, you need a work visa. EU/EEA/Swiss citizens need a Residence Certificate if staying more than three months.

02. Requirements & Process:

Portugal Work Visa Requirements:

Valid passport.
Passport-size photos.
Proof of sufficient funds.
Criminal records from your country and any residence over one year.
Health insurance.
Proof of accommodation.
Employment contract.
Proof of legal entry if already in Portugal, or legal stay proof if applying from another country.

Application Process:

Your employer applies for the Work Permit.
You apply for a Work Visa at the Portuguese Embassy.
After arriving in Portugal, apply for a Residence Permit at the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (SEF). This allows long-term stay.

03. Permanent Residence in Portugal:

Processing for work permits in Portugal usually takes up to 60 days by the SEF and another 2-3 months for an entry visa from the Embassy. Costs vary but include €90 for the entry visa, €83 for the SEF residence permit application, and €72 for the SEF residence permit. Initially, a work visa grants 1-2 years in Portugal, with renewal possible if you have a valid job offer. After five years, you can apply for permanent residency, offering longer permits and similar benefits to Portuguese citizens. Citizenship eligibility arises after six years of temporary or permanent residency, provided you’re proficient in Portuguese and connected to the Portuguese community.
