01. Residence Permits for Parents and Their Minor Children :

02. For Parents of a minor

Case 1: Individuals with Minor Children in Portugal or Over Whom They Have Parental Care

If you are an individual residing in Portugal and caring for your minor children, either because they live here or are Portuguese citizens, follow these steps:

Required Documents:

Two recent, identical photographs with a clear background.
A valid passport or travel document.
Proof of financial means in compliance with Order Number 1563/2007, dated 11/12.
Evidence of suitable accommodation.
Authorization for SEF (Immigration and Borders Service) to check your Portuguese criminal record.
Extract from the criminal records of your country of origin (except for minors under 16).
Your child’s birth certificate.
Documentary evidence of your exercise of parental power and contribution to your child’s maintenance, along with a statement signed by the other parent confirming this.
Important Notes:

Residence Permit with visa waiver is granted only to those without custodial sentences exceeding one year, even if the sentence is for certain serious crimes.
Temporary residence permits are valid for two years from issuance and can be renewed for three-year periods.

 

03. For Children

Case 2: Minors Born and Raised in Portugal Attending Pre-School or School

If you have children who were born in Portugal and are attending pre-school, school, or vocational training, these are the steps to follow:

Required Documents:

Two recent, identical photographs with a clear background.
A valid passport or travel document.
Proof of financial means in compliance with Order Number 1563/2007, dated 11/12.
Evidence of suitable accommodation.
Your child’s birth certificate.
A consular registration certificate with a photograph, if issued by consular representation.
Documentary evidence of school attendance or proof of enrollment in the public, private, or social education system for minors under 3 years old.
Proof of residence in national territory.
Important Notes:

Temporary residence permits are valid for two years from issuance and can be renewed for three-year periods.

 

Case 3: Minors Born in Portugal to Foreign Parents with Residence Permits

For foreign parents with residence permits who have children born in Portugal, these are the requirements:

Required Documents:

Two recent, identical photographs with a clear background.
Your child’s birth certificate.
A consular registration certificate with a photograph or a valid passport.
Important Notes:

The application must be submitted within six months after the birth registration of the minor, by either parent.
In the absence of consular representation in Portugal, the Consular Registration Certificate can be replaced by other proof, including an affidavit on their word of honor signed by the parents.
Under Article 124 of the Aliens Act, foreign children born in Portugal receive the same resident status as their parents. If a parent holds a permanent residence permit, the child will receive a permanent residence permit with the same validity, and if a parent holds a temporary residence permit, the child will receive a temporary residence permit with the same validity.
