01. Do you have a prolonged illness?
Are you or a loved one facing a health condition that requires prolonged medical care? Portugal provides a compassionate pathway for individuals seeking medical treatment and support. In this guide, we simplify the immigration process for medical care to help you understand the requirements and procedures.
02. Quick Process :
If you are an individual suffering from a health condition that demands extended medical care, follow these steps to begin your journey:
Prepare the Required Documents
Two recent, identical photographs, in color with a plain background.
Your passport or any other valid travel document.
Proof of financial means, in line with Order Number 1563/2007 dated 11/12.
Evidence of suitable accommodation.
Authorization for SEF (Immigration and Borders Service) to check your Portuguese criminal record.
Extract from the criminal records of your country of origin.
A medical certificate issued by an official or officially recognized Medical Centre (approved by the Ministry of Health). This certificate must confirm your prolonged illness, preventing your return to your home country to safeguard your health.
Submit Your Application
Submit your application in person. It must be presented on a standard form signed by you or your legal representative, in case you are a minor or legally disabled.
You can submit your application at any SEF directorate or regional delegation. After processing your application, SEF may forward it to the directorate or regional delegation corresponding to your area of residence.
Review and Decision
SEF will conduct a thorough review of your application.
The decision on your application will be made based on your eligibility and the provided documentation.
Important Notes
Residence Permit with visa waiver is only granted to applicants who have not been subject to custodial sentences exceeding one year of imprisonment individually or collectively. This applies even if you were sentenced for certain serious crimes like terrorism or highly organized crime, with the enforcement of the sentence suspended.
A temporary residence permit is valid for two years from the date of issuance and can be renewed for successive periods of three years.
